Description

Polychrome woodblock print of the kuchi-e (口絵) type, taken from Vol. 1 N.8 of the literary magazine Bungei Kurabu (文芸倶楽部) and made in 1895 by the artist Kajita Hanko (梶田半古) as an illustration of the novel “The Torpedo Officer” (水雷士官) by the writer Miyake Seiken (三宅青軒).

On the left of the work a figure that, following the first Sino-Japanese war (日清戦争) and because of the importance of the tasks carried out with an unprecedented close physical contact with the men, strongly imposed herself in the Japanese public imagination: a nurse of the famous Ladies’ Voluntary Nursing Association (篤志看護婦人會).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), published by Hakubunkan (博文館), is in very good condition.
