Description

Beautiful polychrome woodblock print of vertical large oban (大判) format made by the artist Asano Takeji (浅野竹二) and depicting the romon (楼門) “tower gate” of the Kamigamo Jinja (上賀茂神社), one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, dedicated to the veneration of the god of thunder and built in the north of Kyoto to protect the city from malign influences.

The work, entitled “Snow in Kamigamo Shrine” (上賀茂神社雪) was printed for the first time, by the Unsodo (芸艸堂) publishing house, in 1953 and is presented here in a later edition reprinted from the original woodblocks.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), on the left margin of which we also read the seals of the carver Okura Hanbei (大倉半兵衛) and the printer Morimitsu Michiko (森光美智子), is in very good condition.
