Description
Original woodblock print of vertical chuban (中判) format made by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige II (二代目歌川広重) and depicting a daimyo (大名) feudal lord who, escorted by his retainers, is welcomed by the manager of the lodging “Daito” (大當), to spend the night at Seki station (関宿), in the ancient Ise Province (伊勢国), on the road between Edo (江戸) and Kyoto (京都).
The work, produced in February 1864 by the publisher Tsutaya Kichizo (蔦屋吉蔵), owner of Koeido (紅英堂), is entitled precisely “Seki” (関) and is taken from the series “The Tokaido Road” (東海道), depicting the post stations of the famous route connecting the seat of the shogun (将軍) with the imperial capital.
The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙) is in very good general condition.
