Description
Original woodblock print of the “dangerous image” abuna-e (あぶな絵) type attributed to the artist Utagawa Kuninao (歌川国直), a disciple of the famous Utagawa Toyokuni (歌川豊国), and depicting a loving couple. In the background the Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩) “husband and wife rocks”, two rocky stacks joined by a shimenawa (注連縄) sacred rope and located in the sea off Futami (二見), in the ancient Ise Province (伊勢国).
The work, made in 1826, is entitled “Futamigaura” (二タ見ヶ浦) and is taken from the series “Meisho ichiran” (名勝一覧), that is “Famous Places in a Single Glance”.
The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging and the presence of slight imperfections on the margins, is in overall good condition.
