Description

Precious original woodblock print made by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重) and entitled “Maisaka: Sea Ferries at Imagire” (まい坂今切海上舟渡). The work is taken from “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road” (東海道五十三次之内), the famous series also known as Gyosho Tokaido (行書東海道), made between 1841 and 1844 by the publisher Ezakiya Kichibei (江崎屋吉兵衛), owner of Tenjudo (天寿堂).

Maisaka-juku (舞阪宿), in today’s Shizuoka Prefecture (静岡県), was the thirtieth of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido and was located on the eastern shores of Lake Hamana (浜名湖). Travelers crossed the lake to reach Arai-juku (新居宿), the next station. Many visitors still come to the area, which is especially popular with fishermen and clam-diggers.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the obvious patina of time, is in good general condition.
