Description

Against the backdrop of a burning Osaka (大阪), the three police officers in the foreground, from left to right, Oshio Kakunosuke (大塩格之助), Moroboshi Kichigoro (幻吉五郎) and Seta Seinosuke (瀬田済之助) fight in support of the rebellion against the abuses of the Tokugawa shogunate (徳川幕府) led in 1837 by the samurai philosopher and writer Oshio Heihachiro (大塩平八郎), visible in the background on the right.

The rare woodcut presented here was made by Hasegawa Sadanobu II (二代目長谷川貞信), the artist better known under the pseudonym Hasegawa Konobu (長谷川小信), on the occasion of the staging, in September 1873, at the Kado theater (角座) in Osaka, of the kabuki play “A Record of Rumours about Oshio” (大汐噂聞書).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), produced by the publisher Wataya Kihei (綿屋喜兵衛), owner of Kinzuido (金随堂), despite the right signs of aging including slight wrinkles on the margins, is in good general condition.
