Description

Precious original woodblock print of large horizontal format produced in October 1858 by the publisher Yamaguchiya Tobei (山口屋藤兵衛), owner of Kinkodo (錦耕堂). The work is taken from the series “Famous Places in Edo” (江戸名所), by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige II (二代目歌川広重), and is entitled “The Plum Garden” (梅やしき).

The park depicted in the print belonged to the wealthy merchant Iseya Hikoemon (伊勢屋彦右衛門) and was located near the Kameido Tenjin Shrine (亀戸天神社), in today’s Koto Ward (江東区) of Tokyo. The tree in the foreground was known under the name of Garyubai (臥龍梅), the “Sleeping Dragon Plum Tree”.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in overall very good condition.
