Description

Rare original woodblock print of vertical large oban (大判) format made in September 1892 by the artist Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原周延). The work is taken from the series “Azuma Kagami” (あつま鑑), that is “Mirror of the East”, and is entitled “The Death of the Great White Eagle”.

The woodcut, produced by the publisher Murakami Tsuyoshi (村上剛), is an illustration of a scene from the play in four acts “Adzuma: The Japanese Wife” by the English poet and journalist Sir Edwin Arnold.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙) shows very evident signs of aging and in particular restorations, small holes, stains and fold marks.
