Description
The bodhisattva Fugen (普賢菩薩), depicted here mounted on a white elephant, in Buddhism is associated with practice and meditation. He is the patron of the Lotus Sutra (法華経) and, according to the Avatamsaka Sutra (華厳経), made the ten great vows which are the basis of a bodhisattva.
This interesting polychrome woodcut is unsigned and was most likely made during the Bunka era (文化), that is in a period between 1804 and 1818.
The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging and a small point of thinning of the paper on the left, is in overall good condition.
