Description

Elegant double-page woodblock printed illustration depicting the actor Onoe Kikugoro (尾上菊五郎) in the role of Princess Goo (午王姫). The print is the reworking of a design created, in the first month of 1749, by the famous artist Okumura Masanobu (奥村政信) on the occasion of the staging, at the Ichimura-za (市村座) theater in Tokyo, of the kabuki play “Hatsutora Kurama Genji” (初虎鞍馬源氏).

The illustration, entitled “A Figure of the Floating World” (浮世人物), is taken from issue 19 (巻十九) of Bijutsu Sekai (美術世界), that is “The World of Art”, the famous magazine edited by the nihonga (日本画) painter Watanabe Seitei (渡辺省亭) and produced by the publisher Wada Tokutaro (和田篤太郎) of Shunyodo (春陽堂).

The print, made in September 1892 in collaboration with the carver Goto Tokujiro (五島徳次郎) and the printer Yoshida Ichimatsu (吉田市松), despite the right signs of aging, is in very good general condition.
