Description

Original horizontal yatsugiri (八つ切り) format woodblock print of the “dangerous image” abuna-e (あぶな絵) type, made in the 19th century by an artist of the Utagawa school (歌川派) and depicting, as we infer from the content of the text visible in the upper right inset, an adulterous couple.

The work is titled “Hazakura” (葉さくら), a Japanese term that refers to cherry trees during the period following the fall of the flowers, when new leaves of a tender green color begin to sprout.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in good condition.
