Description

Charming woodblock print of vertical large oban (大判) format made around the mid 19th century by an artist of the Utagawa school (歌川派). The title of the work is “Shin Yoshiwara, Edocho Nichome: Kukimanjiya nai Kumoi” (新吉原 江戸町貮丁目 久喜万字屋内 雲井), that is “Kumoi of the House of Pleasure Kukimanji, on the Second Block of Edocho in Shin Yoshiwara District”.

The famous courtesan Kumoi is presented under the flowering branches of a cherry tree and her uchikake (打掛) overcoat is magnificently decorated with a coral branch rising from the water surrounded by marine decorations.

The fine print on Japanese washi paper (和紙) is in good condition, thanks also to a thick relining carried out on the back.
