Description
Important original woodblock print made by the famous artist Keisai Eisen (渓斎英泉) and depicting the courtesan Konoteru (小の照) of the house of pleasure Tamaya (玉屋), in the Shin Yoshiwara (新吉原) district. The woman is presented under the flowering branches of a cherry tree and her uchikake (打掛) overcoat is magnificently decorated with a dragon and, at the bottom, with bats.
The vertical large oban (大判) format print was produced around 1830 by the publisher Ezakiya Kichibei (江崎屋吉兵衛), owner of Tenjudo (天寿堂), and is taken from a series entitled “Three Beautiful Courtesans” (傾城三美人).
The precious woodcut on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the obvious signs of aging, is in overall good condition.
