Description

Precious triptych of polychrome woodblock prints made in September 1884 by the artist Utagawa Kunisada III (三代目歌川国貞) and depicting in the center the daimyo Imagawa Yoshimoto (今川義元) at the foot of Mount Fuji (富士山) together with his samurai: in the left panel Yamamoto Kansuke (山本勘助) and Kinoshita Tokichiro (木下藤吉郎), that is the young Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉), and on the right Matsushita Kaheiji (松下嘉平次) and Yamagata Saburobei (山形三郎兵衛). The context is, in all likelihood, that of the Suruga-Sagami Conflict (駿河相模の戦い) in 1554.

The five warriors are played, from left to right, by the actors Kataoka Gado (片岡我童), Ichikawa Danjuro (市川団十郎), Nakamura Shikan (中村芝翫), Ichikawa Kuzo (市川九蔵) and Ichikawa Sumizo (市川寿美蔵).

The work, produced by the publisher Okura Shirobei (大倉四郎兵衛) and by the carver Hori Tatsu (彫タツ), despite the right signs of aging, is in good condition.
