Description
Original woodblock print of vertical chuban (中判) format made by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige II (二代目歌川広重) and depicting a daimyo (大名) feudal lord who, in all probability, is inside the Ejiri Castle (江尻城). Through a katomado (火灯窓) bell-shaped window we can see the scenic area of the Miho no Matsubara (三保の松原) pine grove, one of the most fascinating stretches of coastline in Japan, overlooked by Mount Fuji (富士山).
The work, produced in September 1863, is titled “Ejiri” (江尻) and is taken from “The Tokaido Road” (東海道), a series dedicated to the post stations of the famous route connecting Edo (江戸) and Kyoto (京都), that is the cities that during the Tokugawa period (徳川時代) were respectively the seat of the shogun (将軍) and the imperial capital.
The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging and a partial trimming of the margins, is in good condition.
