Description

Elegant triptych of polychrome woodblock prints made in February 1896 by the artist Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原周延) and depicting three ladies who, on the night of the Edo Castle (江戸城), admire the blossoming of a cherry tree in the garden.

The work, produced by the publisher Fukuda Hatsujiro (福田初次郎), owner of Gusokuya (具足屋), and by the carver Wada Yujiro (和田勇次郎), is taken from the series “Chiyoda Inner Palace” (千代田の大奥) and is entitled “Cherry Blossoms at Night in the Garden” (お庭の夜桜).

The prints on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging including slight fold marks and tiny holes in particular on the margins, are in overall good condition.
