Description

Important original woodblock print made by the famous artist Keisai Eisen (渓斎英泉) and depicting a bijin (美人) beauty who, on a hot summer day, is fanning herself with a bamboo uchiwa (団扇) fan decorated with fringed pinks (蝦夷河原撫子) and is observing a parrot with curiosity.

The vertical large oban (大判) format work is titled “Inko” (隠呼), that is parrot, and is taken from an interesting untitled series dedicated to birds imported from abroad into the Japanese archipelago and of which at least two other prints are known, which present two other beauties paired with a cockatoo (鸚鵡) and a hill myna (九官鳥).

The rare print, produced in a period between 1818 and 1830, shows evident signs of aging and a relining carried out on the back with another sheet of Japanese washi paper (和紙).
